GENTLE SCALP 2.0
We’ve had Gentle Scalp Shampoo in our range for the last four years, and in 2023, we decided it was time for an upgrade.
We began by upgrading our surfactants to a gentler, non-stripping cleansing system that’s suitable for daily use. To further support scalp comfort, we enriched the formula with aloe vera, allantoin, and panthenol, all known for their soothing and hydrating properties.
We also took the opportunity to refine and expand our essential oil blend, creating a more therapeutic experience with real benefits for the scalp. We added rosemary oil, which a 2015 study found to be as effective as minoxidil in promoting hair growth, but without the irritation commonly associated with synthetic treatments. Clary sage oil was introduced for its ability to balance sebum levels on the scalp, thanks to its high content of linalyl acetate. We included cedarwood oil to help strengthen hair and reduce breakage, and lavender oil to bring calming relief to sensitive or inflamed scalps.
Not only is it better for our scalp and hair, it is also more biodegradable and better for our planet - better surfactant system & removal of the PEG-7.

Unlike typical shampoos that focus only on cleansing the hair (with over 90% of the market still using harsh surfactants like SLES and ALS), Gentle Scalp 2.0 takes a scalp-first approach, recognising that a healthy scalp is the foundation of healthy hair. That’s why we formulated it with ultra-mild, biodegradable surfactants like Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate and Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate, which cleanse effectively without stripping or irritating the scalp. To provide lasting comfort, especially for those dealing with sensitivity, itchiness, or flaking, we added soothing botanicals like aloe vera, allantoin, and panthenol.
We also refined the essential oil blend used in Gentle Scalp 2.0, each one selected for its proven benefits for scalp and hair. Rosemary, Clary Sage, Cedarwood, Lavender, Peppermint, and Tea Tree work together to support scalp health, rebalance oil production, soothe irritation, and even help promote hair growth. With this synergistic blend, Gentle Scalp 2.0 is more than just a shampoo, it’s a hair tonic and scalp therapy in one.
And unlike many conventional shampoos, it’s PEG-free and available in a refillery format, with a conscious focus on sustainability. Gentle Scalp 2.0 is not just better for you, it is better for our planet.

- More Responsible: 2.0 is a more biodegradable formula. We are very happy to have been able to replace the PEG-based ingredients (synthetic petroleum based)

At Re{me}dy, we choose to go SLS/SLES-free because we believe in creating gentle, skin-friendly products that are better for you and better for the planet.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are commonly used surfactants that create foam and help cleanse the skin but they can also be too harsh, especially for sensitive or dry skin. These ingredients are known to strip away natural oils, potentially causing dryness, irritation, and disruption to the skin barrier over time.
Instead, we use milder, sulfate-free alternatives that still cleanse effectively without compromising your skin’s natural balance. These gentle surfactants are biodegradable, safer for sensitive skin, and more environmentally responsible.
By avoiding SLS/SLES, we align with our core mission: to offer products that Better for You, Better for Our Planet.
Firstly, our priority is to create the best possible product that almost everyone can use. While we produce in smaller batches, there is still a minimum volume requirement, which is why we are not focusing on highly specialized or niche shampoos at this stage. Instead, our goal is to formulate the gentlest shampoo possible, one that provides effective cleansing while making hair washing both pleasant and convenient.
When it came to scent, our approach was different. Rather than aiming to create the "best-smelling" shampoo, our priority was selecting essential oils with proven benefits for the hair and scalp. From these oils, we then experimented extensively with blending, working through nearly a thousand combinations over many months. This process led us to the unique fragrance of Gentle Scalp 2.0.
We are especially delighted to hear that customers enjoy the scent, as it was an incredibly challenging process given the limitations of using only beneficial oils. The result is a blend that not only smells good (in our view) but is also 100% supportive of hair and scalp health. With Gentle Scalp 2.0, every ingredient serves a meaningful purpose.
